DESCRIPTION
Lord Renwick was British Ambassador to South Africa in the period leading to and following the release of Nelson Mandela (1987 – 1991) and then to the United States (1991 – 1995). He previously was head of the Rhodesia Department during the negotiations that led to the independence of Zimbabwe and the Under Secretary responsible for negotiations with the European Union from 1984 to 1987.
Lord Renwick served as Deputy Chairman of the merchant bank, Robert Fleming, then became Vice Chairman, Investment Banking of J.P. Morgan Europe, and Vice Chairman of J.P. Morgan Cazenove. He has held numerous other directorships, notably with British Airways, Richemont, BHP Billiton, Fluor Corporation and SABMiller, and was the lead Trustee of the Economist. He currently is Senior Advisor to Richemont, a Director of Stonehage Fleming and the Excelsior Mining Corporation.
Lord Renwick is the author of “Fighting with Allies”, about the US / UK relationship, “Economic Sanctions, A Journey with Margaret Thatcher”, “The End of Apartheid, Helen Suzman (biography)”, and “How to Steal a Country”.
