Global Head of Specialty Materials and Processes
DESCRIPTION
Richard is the Global Head of Specialty Materials and Processes for Appian, responsible for technical and intellectual property assessment and oversight in energy-related businesses. He is based in London.
Prior to joining Appian, Richard was Global Lead, Energy Storage for Morgan Advanced Materials, an industry-leading global carbon and ceramics manufacturer, where he was responsible for all Morgan’s technical, commercial and business development activities related to energy storage including materials and components for lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries, electric vehicles, fuel cells and fuel reformers.
Born in England, Richard has also been based in U.S.A., South Korea and P. R. China with a wide variety of roles ranging from product creation to international sales and management. On three occasions he has led or been part of teams which created best-in-the-world materials – for use in the production of PDC cutters for oil and gas drilling, for the ablative material used in solid rocket boosters in space propulsion and for the anode material used in lithium-ion batteries for power tools. He is a named inventor on several key patents related to energy storage and has spoken at over 50 international conferences, recognized as an industry expert in lithium-ion batteries.
Richard is a dual national with U.S. and U.K. citizenships. He holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Cambridge and is also a registered United States Patent Agent.
