DESCRIPTION
Chris is Vice President of Tailings at Appian. Chris is based in London and is responsible for undertaking technical due diligence on mining projects from a tailings and dam safety perspective.
Before joining Appian, Chris was Director of Tailings for Teck Resources, where he led the company wide implementation of the Global Industry Standards on Tailings Management, and served as an industry representative for a regulatory review of tailings regulations in British Columbia, Canada. Prior to this, he managed the tailings department at Teck’s Highland Valley Copper where he was responsible for all aspects of engineering and construction for one of the largest tailings facilities in North America. Earlier in his career, Chris worked with Golder Associates, where he led or was involved in a wide range of projects across several commodities including copper, zinc, gold, coal and diamonds in environments ranging from the Canadian Arctic to the Atacama Desert.
With over 25 years of consulting and management experience in tailings management and geotechnical engineering, Chris brings extensive design, construction and operations expertise. Throughout his career, he has gained skills in planning, design, construction and project management, budgeting, risk management and performance monitoring. He has a track record of advancing management practices to incorporate risk, social performance and environmental sustainability into tailings related decision making.
Chris holds an MASc (Civil) and BASc (Geological) from the University of British Columbia, and dual Executive MBA degrees from Queen’s and Cornell Universities.
