Based in Perth, Western Australia, Paul is a Senior Operating Partner at Appian and is responsible for providing operational oversight with Appian’s portfolio companies and advice with the analysis and evaluation of potential investments.
Paul’s career spans 35 years across a wide spectrum of the global resources sector with the last 20 years in executive, operational and projects leadership.
Prior to joining Appian, he was COO of South32 with accountability for the global manganese business, steelmaking coal, base metals assets and major capital projects across Australia. After 23 years with BHP, Paul moved to join the South32 executive leadership team as Chief Transformation Officer establishing South32 in the industry’s largest demerger from BHP. His prior roles at BHP included President of the fully integrated Nickel West business and President and COO of Ekati Diamonds in arctic Canada. He began his career in underground gold and diamond mining in South Africa in the 1980s and 90s. His career includes commodity experience in gold, base metals, copper / uranium, bauxite / alumina, manganese, nickel, coal for steel and diamonds, and in major projects construction.
Paul is Australian, has lived in 4 continents and worked in Canada, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Colombia, Australia and the USA. He has held a number of Directorships, JV Chairman roles and Industry Group leadership roles. Paul is currently a member of Wyloo Metals Advisory Committee, and Independent Non-Executive Director of De Grey Mining.
Paul holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) from the Western Australian School of Mines, completed the Kellogg Executive Development Program, and is a graduate and member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
