Michael is the Founder and CEO of Appian Capital Advisory and also Chairman of the Investment Committee. Splitting his time across Appian’s sites, Michael has a global role with responsibility for developing and honing Appian’s long-term investment strategy, deal sourcing, overseeing Appian’s execution of transactions, portfolio company CEO engagement, managing core investor relationships and overseeing the Fund.

Michael has overseen the development of Appian into a leading private equity investor in the metals and mining sector and seeks to continuously hone the investment strategy for the Fund to remain ahead of the industry.

Originally from Austria and Singapore, Michael has lived in 8 cities around the world and started his career ~20 years ago structuring foreign investment into China, before joining J.P. Morgan’s Metals and Mining team where he worked on ~US$185 billion worth of Metals and Mining transactions across M&A, equity and debt.

He holds a M.Fin. from the European School of Economics and a B.B.A. in International Business.

Michael is a recipient of the Financial News Top 40 under 40 Private Equity Leaders Award.

Michael was recently voted in the top 10 of Mining’s Most Influential people for 2023 according to Mining Journal.

Michael is also Chairman of the Trustees of the Appian Way Charitable Foundation which has created over 11,000 jobs indirectly in parts of Africa and Latin America.

Michael is also a Director of the General Partner and Investment Advisor, Appian Capital Advisory LLP.
