DESCRIPTION
Richard is the Director of Operations and Deputy COO of Appian. Richard oversees all of Appian’s portfolio assets from a corporate level, focused on operational oversight, performance monitoring and ensuring compliance with fund requirements.
Richard is a senior mining executive who has worked in the global resource industry – both mining and recycling – for thirty years. Prior to joining Appian, Richard began his mining career as an engineer with Rio Tinto in 1996, and has since held a series of senior leadership roles around the world.
Richard has extensive technical, operational and strategic development experience, and has contributed to advancing some of the most valuable mining assets worldwide. His notable positions include President and COO of the Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada, Managing Director of Rössing Uranium in Namibia, and General Manager of the Jadar lithium-borate project in Serbia. Richard also spent two years with the lithium battery recycling company Li-Cycle, first as Regional President, North America and then as Regional President, Europe.
He has also worked in Australia, Mongolia, Alaska, and South Africa.
Prior to 1996, Richard served as an officer in the British Royal Marine Commandos. Richard has an honours degree in mining engineering from Newcastle University in the UK.
